Default "Whump, whump" noise from front

I've picked up a new noise on my 2005 2.5t XC90. When I accelerate from a stop I notice a rhythmic "whump" noise. As I speed up the noise speeds up. Sounds like someone tapping on the front frame with a rubber mallet. After 40mph the noise is gone (or maybe masked by driving noise). I did a search but couldn't find posts with the same issue.

Isolating a side has been tough but it sounds more passenger side than driver's side.

It's only a FWD so that might narrow our any AWD noises/issues.

My ideas...
1. Tire noise (checked tires, they seem normal)
2. Axles - don't know what noise they make when going bad
3. CV joints - less likely, not really a clicking noise, and not turning related
4. Transmission - less likely with passenger side noise
5. Wheel bearing - not sure wheel bearings make whump noises and goes away when going faster

Anyone have similar issues or ideas? Thanks!

would guess tire related. i'd swap rear tires to front and see if it changes.

Thanks for the input guys. I've got some time off here so I'll do some tinkering. I'll try to remember to update the thread with the final diagnosis. Thanks!

I'd guess tires as well, but obviously it's hard to tell over the internet. Does it change when turning? That would point toward a bearing. What kind of tires? Are they cupped at all?

I'll check the tires today. They're fairly new but that doesn't always mean anything. It's possible they might be overinflated. I filled them when the temps dipped and temps are higher now so we'll see. Seems to only make the noise when traveling in a straight line. I agree, I'd expect the noise to get worse on one side or the other with turning.

Tires are Falken Sincera SN-211. Overall they've been decent tires.

As I mentioned I'll post an update when I know more. Thanks again!

Yeah, it could be those tires. There is a difference in quality with the cheap tires vs. some nice Michelins or other more expensive tire.
