Winter Tire for XC90 T8 Hybrid
Does anyone have a recommendation for a 20" winter tire (studded or not) for a 2018 T8 Hybrid Inscription version? I have 20" rims and Volvo says "no chains whatsoever!". I agree, as there isn't any room in the fenders well. That's OK with me and I have not had any issues with the stock Perrelli tires. Then again, I have yet to drive over the low mountain passes in a driving snowstorm. I am just curious what others have discovered, and how well they are working out in various driving conditions.

First issue is there's not a lot of choices on who makes snows for a 20 inch rim. You can replace the 275/45-20s with 255/45s and be close enough - keeping in mind, narrower is better in snow (lets the tire cut through to get grip off the side lugs). If it were my car, I'd probably buy a set of winter rims using either 235/55-19s or 235-60-18s. Going -1 or -2 also will get you a better selection of tires. As to brands, Pirelli is all over the big rims, but if you go to the 18s you'll be able to choose from all the popular brands.

Ah yes. Now I remember. That explains why I nearly wiped out going up Hwy 431 from Reno to Incline Village (Lake Tahoe) many years ago. I had just traded in my trusty Jeep Cherokee for a Chevy Trailblazer. The Jeep Cherokee had tall, narrow tires, the Chevy had wide, shorter tires. I could go anywhere with the Jeep - not so much with the Chevy. I guess I never fully understood the issue until now. Thank you!

haha, last time I was in Incline Village I was in my 84 Quattro. Talk about small tires.. they were 195/60-14s... Car was a bit light in the back end but you could manually lock both the center and rear differential from a switch in the cabin. Car could spin all four tires in the snow like a modern drift car.
