XC90 6-cylinder acceleration
I'm looking at several mid-sized SUVs including the XC90 and will test drive one this week. I was curious about anyone's impressions on the acceleration of the 2007 XC90 6-cylinder. Some reviews say the acceleration is good, others say it's inadequate. If you've driven one, what are your thoughts?
IMO it will depend upon the majority of your driving conditions. If most of your driving is around town, the 6 should be just fine. If most of your driving OTOH is on the freeway, then you may want to opt for the 8. The speed limit in my state is 75 mph (which seems to mean that most drive at 80 mph...) and for me, the 6 struggled a bit to "keep up" at that speed. The 4.4L did just fine and seemed very happy to purr along at said 80 or 85 mph. As most of my driving is across wide open spaces and stretches of interstate, I went with the 8.
I have a 2005 XC-90 T-6 like the picture above and pulled an 8 ft U-haul trailer from GA to OK at about 80 mph and couldn't really tell that I was towing. The only exception was when we changed lanes or hit bumps in the road that made the trailer bounce.

Make sure it doesn't come with a GM-built tranny; it would be a nightmare. I'm not sure if Volvo used that gearbox on 2006-2007 models. Test drive each trim level, you don't want to regret after paying for one.

Well I just got back from test driving an XC90 and overall really enjoyed it. The 6-cylinder was more than adequate. It won't win any drag racing championships but it wasn't slow enough to be an issue with us. We are trying to decide between a slightly used 07 and a new 08. The 08 we like came with the Convenience, Premium and Versatility packages. We weren't planning on dealing with them but they made us an offer on our trade-in and a price for the 08XC90. We didn't go any further since we want to talk it over in private but hopefully we can work a deal out.
Thanks everyone for your input!

Volvo discontinued T-6 and GM tranny in the middle of 2005.
I also understand that V8 and I-6 get almost the same mileage, but in the NYC traffic my wife gets 11 mpg...
