Default Advice needed- Wheels & Tires – Bent Rims and Rubbing

Hello,

I am thinking of replacing my wheels and tires to eliminate bent rims and tire rubbing. Can you advise if my potential upgrades will solve my problems?

I drive a 2002 Volvo S60 T5 with 17" x 7.5" Tethys rims with P235/45ZR-17 Continental ContiExtreme Contact tires. The front tires rub during tights turns but more importantly I have bent three rims requiring replacement within the past 2 ½ years.

I was thinking of replacing the rims and tires with Elbrus 105 16” x 7.5” rims and 215/55R16 Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires. (from Volvoforum sponsor TireRack)

Will the 16” rim give me more sidewall height preventing future dented rims? Is that additional sidewall height meaningful?

Will the same 7.5” rim width not do anything to prevent continued tire rubbing in tight turns? If I select a 16” x 7” rim, will a slightly smaller 7” rim width with the same 215/55R16 Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires help?

I know little about rims and tires. Any advice or thoughts is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
