View Full Version : No Oil - Damage? Help

We just took our S60 2.5t (04 with 12,760 miles) in to Volvo for service. Oil change, rediator flush, some warranty stuff. Drove it home and the next day (42 miles since service) my wife noticed the enging notification "low oil pressure - safely stop" come on. She was 1 block from home so she went home. I checked the dip stick and it showed no oil and no it is very difficult to start. Any ideas what to expect from Volvo? Possible damage? We go back to the dealer tomorrow.

Welcome to the forum Jim. You will get a quicker response at the 'S60' or the 'General chat' section of this forum.

This is certainly a very difficult situation and hard to predict the outcome. Did you notify the dealership as soon as you noticed the warning light. Have you checked the oil drainplug to see if it is loose? Any oil on the ground? Does the oil fill cap smell burnt.Engine tapping or knocking? Find these answers out. If any are aparent, leave things be. Then, I'd have the dealer make a road trip to your house to let him know the seriousness of the situation.

I agree I wouldn't mess with starting it anymore at all.
Make them come get it from your house.
Does it knock?
Major oil leaks?

We called the dealer right away but it was Saturday...nobody home. I spoke with the manager and I will call them this AM and have them come get the car. I just looked and there is oil all over the underside of the car and a large puddle underneath...must be a loose plug or filter...which would explain why we got the 42 miles out of it! I just hope the dealer is cooperative. This is our first Volvo...used to American cars and ALL repair issues have been hughe hassels.

Check your warranty language. I do not believe you will find that Volvo owes a new engine. It is up to Volvo to decide what they will do. Your options are to insist on (attempt) an extended warranty if the engine is not replaced or in the alternative you can attempt a costly piece of litigation. Remember, you have a used engine.............not new and so you are entitled to a like kind and condition engine and if that means simply pouring oil in and returning the auto.............well that's what you get. However if the engine begins using oil or has oil related issues then you can insist on at least a rebuild (short block). Let us know how you make out.

Surely it's a blown oil filter gasket or something.
I would take as many photo's as i could, make sure your present when they hoist it, make sure you have your camera handy.
Do you have any mechanic friends?? if so take them along.
They will palm it if they can...don't you worry about that!!

Don't let them take the car in without you being there.

Here is a follow up to our situation. Sorry it took so long. At all times we met/spoke with the service manager. The vehicle went back to the dealer via Volvo roadside assistance...no cost to us. The vehicle had the oil replaced and a conditioner was added...the engine was "inspected" and the oil pressure was "checked". The oil pressure was OK, and that meant to them that there was no damage..."come get your car". I argued that the damage would be to the long term viability to the motor and after much discussion (including a discussion by the dealer with the manufaturer's rep) we were offered a small discount on a B2B extended warranty. I really did not want to fight about this whole thing so we negotiated the warranty which retails for around $2,500 down to $1,500 and purchased it. Vehicle seems to be OK...added security for another 3 years including all other components...not just the motor. Overall fairly satisfied with the experience.

Thanks for the update Jimabbs. Best late than never.Do you think the engine performs as well? Keep a close eye on the oil. I suspect it will consume more and get dirty faster. MyV70 with206K miles still doesn't require oil between changes.(nor my S80)Keep records and complain if you require top offs often. Good luck. Eric
