Default Oil filter cap

Ok so I went to change my own oil for the first time today everything was going swimmingly until I went to remove the filter cap. The cap removers that just hook onto a socket wrench didnt have the right size available at a local auto parts store. I couldn't get a strap wrench to work with the angle, I even tried a leather belt form my closet and couldnt get it off(obviously I couldnt do it by hand either). I know volvo likes to keep there **** on lock down and hard to find so I was wondering if there is a VOLVO specific size or tool that is the only one that can get it off or if anyone has any other recommendations cause I dont like the fact that I'm using the same filter twice. Thanks for your help guys & gals.

Default RE: Oil filter cap

Hmmm,
I'm a new Volvo owner, need to change oil for 1st time. Was going to post oil change questions till I saw this post.
What with the oil filter cap?
Do I need to buy a special (Volvo) oil filter?
Any other surprises?
Thanks,Mike.

The filter is not like the spin-ons a lot of other cars use. It's a cartridge that fits into a removable cover (cap). This is what it looks like: http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartD...spx?id=1275808. It does not have to be a Volvo filter. You might be able to get it at an auto parts store (Purolator makes this one http://www.pureoil.com/smartlink/?partnum=L15315) or you can order it from http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartD...spx?id=1275811or other online stores. Make sure you change the o-ring on the cover when you do the oil filter change. Also, you may want to order a new aluminum crush washer for the drain plug to make sure you get a good seal.

Also try IPDUSA.com. The better filters are the Mann or Mahle filters. They just seem to fit better. As you thread the filter onto the cap center post, the filter hole seals tightly. I have seen some filters that just have hard plastic there that would not seem to seal as well.

Great information, thanks.
Ordered what I needed at Europarts, including the cap tool.
