View Full Version : 1998 s90 head gasket replacment jimmy6154 04-24-2009, 06:07 PM Anyone know of a good how to guide to replace a head gasket on a 1998 s90. thanks tech 04-24-2009, 07:33 PM It is pretty straight foward. Make alot of things and keeps bolts in seperate spots. We can help with the torque specs when you need them. jimmy6154 04-24-2009, 07:53 PM thanks for the reply. I just got out of a nasty divorce and was taken to the cleaners so I lost all my tools, cars, house, everything. I managed to pick up this car for a few hundred but it leaks oil like a sive. Is there are 120k miles on the car so I'm wondering if there is anything else I should do while I got it open. I'm no mechanic, but I can lossen bolt and place things in their own box. I need the works persay as it goes for the "how to" on no budget. thanks again tech 04-24-2009, 08:11 PM Also make sure the vent system is cleaned. jimmy6154 04-24-2009, 08:42 PM what is the vent system? lol I need some hand holding here guys tech 04-24-2009, 08:45 PM Under the intake manifold there is a black box attached to the motor. It is the vent box. Basically the PCV system. Johnny Mullet 04-24-2009, 09:32 PM Vent system................... http://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28506 jimmy6154 05-13-2009, 06:57 PM so no one has a guide to do this or a manual I should buy? I need a step by step here... something like 1, drain water 2, drain oil 3, disconnect battery 4, take out this bolt... 5, etc... Johnny Mullet 05-13-2009, 07:42 PM You must first determine if you need a head gasket or you simply have a plugged vent system. Where is the oil coming from? Does the car overheat? tech 05-13-2009, 09:35 PM The haynes manual might have a good walk though. jimmy6154 05-14-2009, 10:50 PM it doesn't overheat but their is oil pooled in the bolt divots around where you put the oil in the engine. Johnny Mullet 05-15-2009, 06:29 AM I would start with repairing the vent sytem first before ripping the head off. Here is an illustrated guide.......... http://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28506 V70-T5 05-15-2009, 02:17 PM hope this helps jimmy6154 05-21-2009, 11:40 PM so this is fix. it turned out to be the oil filler cap had a bad gasket on it. Replaced it for 9 bucks and I'm good to go. So I found this out by removing the plastic thing that covers the top of the engine. It has some writing on it so not sure what it was called. Well under it all the little nook and cranny's were filled with oil. So I'm like cool the leak is up here and not the head gasket. So I take it to the power washer and hose it clean. I watched over it for a few minutes to see if I could spot where the oil was coming out of and sure enough it was spewing from the filler cap into the grooves and down onto the engine where it burned and smoked off. Ironic thing is I took this thing to 3 different reputable mechanics and they all said head gasket ranging from 1200 to 1700 bucks. Never trust those guys again I tell you. glad it was easier then it really was anyways and thanks everyone here for the help. tech 05-22-2009, 09:13 PM You might have a clogged vent system though causing excess pressure making it leak. So watch it closely. |
