Default Engine Fan cycling?

I didn't see anything about this, so if I missed it I apoligize. I have noticed that my 850 turbo seems to be cycling the coolant fan more than I think it shoud. My rpm surges a bit and I get something that sounds like a selenoid cycling on and off under the hood while idling and at stop lights. Is this normal with these cars? It doesn't seem to affect how the car runs, its just a bit annoying. I don't have any warning lights on. This is my first Volvo, so I am playing catch up and trying to learn what I can.

If you have the defroster on it could be the AC system cycling on and off. Each time it needs to cycle on the cooling fan automatically kicks in no matter what the coolant temp is as the AC condenser needs the air flow over it to function properly.

I did wonder about that as the car does have the dual zone climate and auto control, I think I had it set to heat my feet. I will play around with it and see. Thanks for the help..
