metallic rattle when accelerating
i purchased a new to me automatic 07 s40 2.4i 90,000 miles. love the car but three months into owning it i started to get a weird metallic rattling noise. almost like an exhaust shield rattle, controlled by the throttle. shields all seem in place and strong. it happens from 25-60 mph when the car is called to down shift from 4th or 3rd to accelerate this noise becomes louder and. let off the throttle and the noise stops. Cannot recreate the noise while car is parked. must be ing drive and happens more when its cold. i also have a check engine with the code of p0026. research has pointed me to solenoid behind oil cap.
any insight to the noise, or if the code is related would be helpful.

Check the main engine mount on the pax side. Mine had split in two at the rubber and ground down until it was metal on metal rattle when accelerating.
Do a search for a failed motor mount. There are a couple of very good pictures around here showing the damage. Replacing it is very easy with basic tools.

Have a look at your transmission fluid - make sure the level is ok and the fluid is not too dark. Probably not a bad idea to change the fluid (a flush or a dropping of the pan to inspect) but this code suggests either a sensor in the transmission is going out of spec, you have some issues with the transmission valve body solenoid or even a transmission computer software issue (check with the dealer if there's known software issues with your model). Good time to buy a VIDA CD... Not sure about the rattle - does it make noise when the car is revving out of gear? does it map to road speed or engine speed? I've seen other posts where people got the P0811 to go away (for a while at least) with a transmission flush but you may want to research some on the possible causes.

The rattle is throttle controlled, doesn't do it when you brake, doesn't do it when you rev in park. Only when you call for power, transmission kicks down and you get the rattle. If you floor it, it isn't apparent unti the car shifts a few times... It really only becomes previlent when the car calls for power when you enter a hill at a slow speed, or when trying to moderately accelerate.

Iron, I came across two threads worth reviewing -
https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...uestion-20941/
there it turned out to be a torque rod (ie motor mount issue suggested by Hudini)
and another

where the problem was traced to the wastegate rod being loose...

I was thinking of detonation but I'd think if the knock sensor were bad, it would throw a code. If it were a loose bolt or heat shield etc, revving the engine should at least throw off some sound. Does that takes this back to motor mounts/torque rods/transmission mounts as the best place to start looking???

I have a 2011 V60 and i've just joined up to this forum to ask about what i think is the very same rattle. Seems like its coming from the rear left of the car under load, particularly uphill when you ask for some torque. I really don't think its coming from the engine end of the car. I've had cars where manifold bolts are loose before and this is a very different noise. My V60 is going into have a replacement alternator next week under extended warranty (they have to mail one from Sweden because they don't have one in Australia!), and i will ask them to have a good look around for the source of this rattle too. If i have any luck getting it fixed i'll post the details here. fingers crossed.
