98 v70 wastegate question
Hi all - I wasn't able to find anything that seemed to relate to my problem with a search, so I'm hoping someone may be able to help.
I have a '98 v70 w/ the lpt motor that has a rattle that seems to be coming from the rear center of the engine under part throttle. It is progressively getting worse. Seems like it may be the wastegate, but I'm not certain. I can move the actuator rod easily by hand - is this normal? I've compared it to a '97 850 turbo, and there seems to be a slight difference, but I'm not sure if it is correct either. How much tension should there be on that actuator rod (spring tension), with the engine off? I'm used to my Supra & Celica turbos, which at ~7 psi stock wastegate setting, the rod is not easily moveable by hand.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Could be that or the turbine in the turbo starting to go.

You should have to pull a little to get it on there is a specific way to set it with a tool to add pressure to the waste gate.

One thing that I might should mention: when I bought the car, it had a CEL for emissions leak. When I finally tracked it down, turned out the purge valve on the fan shroud was not connected to the charcoal cannister - instead, it had been connected to the pressure side of the boost solenoid, and the line from the turbo that should have been there was just lying out on the side of the engine. No idea how long it had been this way, but seemed to be quite some time judging from the oil surrounding the area where the line from the turbo was laying.
Do you guys think having these connections incorrect may have caused some damage to the turbo itself? Or at least to the vacuum system? (it is connected correctly now)
How is the boost?
Maybe the shaft is work and the blades are rubbing when the turbo is winding up some.
Was it the waste gate hose that was off?
If so then the turbo was running full boost at all times and it might have messed the turbo up.

not sure about the boost, don't have a boost gauge connected currently. I've just located an old boost gauge I used to have on my Supra, been planning on connecting it when I get the chance. I've never been able to hear the turbo spool, with windows up or down; but then again, I'm used to how my Supra sounds, that you can hear spool up from a block away. How does the turbo normally sound on the lpt engine? Is it usually fairly easy to hear?
The wastegate line to the boost control solenoid was connected, as well as the purge; the one that was disconnected is the pressure line, that connects from the output of the turbo. I think it was pretty much running the turbo to it's limit, working off just the wastegate spring with no control by the ECU, since it was likely the ECU never saw how much boost was being produced (from what I understand of how the Volvo boost control system works).
I will try to check for shaft play on the turbo within the next few days, maybe tomorrow morning if I have time before work.

If the pressure line was off it was running full boost at all time. The waste gate was never moving.
You can usually hear the LPT some it isn't loud like the HPT but you can still hear it.

I was able to do a little bit of testing on the way home from work: if I really stand on the gas, and listen closely, I think I can hear the turbo. Not sure. I'll try and get the boost gauge installed on my next off day (Wednesday); I'll also check the turbo itself while I'm there. However, I don't really have a good frame of reference for "low pressure", as defined by Volvo (I run ~16psi on my Supra, so I consider its stock 7psi to be "low"). How much psi should I see, if it's boosting normally, once I have the gauge on? I've read conflicting reports in various places, ranging from ~1.5psi to ~7psi.
Well, I was able to find my problem - and it had nothing to do with the wastegate.
I got all the air cleaner assy. removed, down to the turbo, so I could replace the patched vacuum line for the pressure to the control solenoid, and check the play in the turbo while I was there. Turbo was fine, spun freely, no shaft play at all. Then I noticed that the torque rod/engine mount that runs to the firewall was against the metal for the mount that bolts to the firewall. Rubber in it was completly shot. I could see the wear marks on the mount housing where the brace had been rubbing on it. Replaced it with another from a parts car, and the "rattle" is gone.
Thanks for the help guys, it got me looking closely in the right area [sm=smiley20.gif]

Got mine last week and today the car stuttered then stalled. After the third attemp it started, but left me a little surprise. The "Check Engine" light. Stopped by Autozone to get a reading, it gave a Wastegate a P0243 and P0171. They said that it's running too lean and could be O2 sensor or MAS or ie?
There is rattle and vibration as you mentioned above. Should I repair or sell it? I like the way it drives but can't afford to fix all the time.
