Default Still searching for the mysterious oil leak

2001 S40, just purchased (cheap). Need to find ALL the leaks. I spent time yesterday replacing the gasket and the o-ring type seal on the turbo return tube. thanks to all for the link. once I removed the sub-frame mount, it was a breeze.

While the oring end may have been leaking some, it is not the main problem. I see oil coming from the drivers side, side of the engine. There is a gizmo on that end of the exhaust cam. See photos...

Here is a shot, kinda fuzzy, from under.... I tried to use a mirror it dripped oil on the mirror...

There is SO MUCH stuff in front of this thing, I can't tell if it has 1 or two bolts holding it on. Turbo tube, fuel line, injector wires, plug wires. Does it have a gasket, is it traditionally a leaker? Do I have to remove EVERYTHING to get to it?

That is your cam sensor cover. It holds the cam sensor and covers the reluctor wheel on the exhaust cam. Here is a pic with most everything out of the way. There is quite allot of piping and wiring in that area.

Under the cover is the reluctor wheel on the cam. Behind that is a cam seal. If that cam seal leaks it has to go somewhere. I'd pull the cam sensor first to see if it's covered in oil.

Thanks. I was able to clear enough stuff to see a part # for the housing. Googled and found this:

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...ic.php?p=54480

The link is for an older car and it is on the front cam with less stuff in the way. But Matthew goes thru changing the seal. Mentions a very important step... MARK THE LOCATION OF THE (you call it a reluctor wheel, he calls it a) TRIGGER WHEEL TO THE CASE. I assume the '01 S40 will be the same. I'll take it apart then see if I can find the 1.9T S40 seal.

YES! it is leaking. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy. At least that I found one. There may be more, but this is absolutely a LEAK. You can see below the opening that it is covered with oil. It is so high, it hits pipes, and braces, moves right or left until it hits the subframe then pools up enough to slosh over and drip.

Now I just need to find the seal.

malcolm2,

The seal for that is an SKF 11809. You can find the SKF's much cheaper than the Volvo seal... and the SKF is the exact same seal. SKF makes them for Volvo.

I hate to ask, but have you looked under your timing belt cover yet?

This is one thing the PO told me that he had just changed. I have come to find out that there are several things to fix under here. But it looks like he put on a new sprocket. I read about an oring inside the sprocket, there is a little piston, maybe?

Anyway it is dry under there....for now anyway.

just a quick update. I got everything back on the car and drove it about 17 miles last night. NOT A DROP OF OIL! What a relief. It was the exhaust cam seal on the drivers side, opposite the timing belt made is a bit easier. Turns out that the trigger wheel inside the housing will only go in ONE way, so it did not need to be marked.

This is the little piston thing that leaks. It will leak, just a matter of when.
