Would it (your oil smoke observations) coincide with having only done very short trips/short duration as opposed to a good long highway run with a hot motor immediately prior?

The PCV system would be worth a check. Test for crankcase pressure using the glove test on the oil filler opening.
Short runs will cause the motor to sludge up over time and a build up of condensation in the oil also occurs. The latter often is noticeable if you have a buttery cream showing on the dipstick just below the sticks 'O' ring seal.
Sometimes that is mistaken for a blown head gasket but is merely the condensation issue.
A good long hot run, regularly keeps the condensation from occurring.
If it is actually the PCV system and especially blocked up engine ports where the oil trap is connected any excessive crankcase pressure may be forcing oil uo past the valve stem seals, hence the blue exhaust smoke.
A higher mileage motor is likely to have less effective stem seals anyway.
Blocked PCV systems can eventually cause cam seal failures or rear crankshaft main seal failure also if it gets bad enough.
