Cool 98 v70 blown engine

This is new to me, so bear with me. I have a 98 v70 with only 175k km's on it and a chunk of spark plug fell into a cylinder doing untold damage. I have an attachment to this car, so letting it go is tough. The rest of the car is truly outstanding and I want it to live on. I'm thinking performance or reman engine. Something really good and not from a yard. Any suggestions? I am in Canada north of Toronto. cheers

Cars are like women. Volvos are like women who come from a wealthy family. Performance rebuild or reman engine will both be $$$. The question is, how attached are you?

Get a motor from a salvage yard - V70, XC70, or 850 should do it. Much cheaper. Pull both the motor and transmission at the same time from the top. Not that bad a job. Check Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market.

okay, so that makes sense, but it's got to be tough to find a motor that is still going to give me some miles and reliability. The salvage yard engines must all be high miles by now.

You neglected to metion the cause of all of this. Also, what is the condition of th erest of the motor/ components?
How mechanically inclined are you? Could you do all the work except for the machining?
One last thing, cars don't just go to salvage yards because they've been run into the ground, there are some real gems that have been totaled. While they aren't as easy to come by as high mileage, poorly maintained cars, they are there.
I just saw a gorgeous, late model volvo that had been hit very hard in the rear. However, air bags deployed, etc.
MOTOR WAS IN STELLAR SHAPE.

The outcome of course will all come down to how much cash you are capable of parting with. I would also consider the condition of the suspension, as this can be costly to deal with issues there...

Let us know how it all turns out.

thanks for this...as far as the cause, it was a spark plug breaking up and falling into the cylinder. It pounded that one cylinder head and piston all up. The rest is good, but I certainly don't have the skill level to pull heads, etc. and motors out. The suspension should be good as it has only 175,000 km on it (110 k miles). I recently put CV's, tie rods and ball joints in up front. I will look into salvage motors that are from wrecks (a previous poster gave me a good heads-up on a website that has decent motors). I will keep at it and see where things take me. Thanks all.

Don't mean to keep ripping open the wound, but what caused the failure? Were the plugs old? Did the whole plug take a dip in the CC or just electrode material?

What brand of plugs do I need to stay away from?

Thanks again, and I'm sorry for your situation, I truly am. I know all about the emotional attachment some people have with their cars.

Again, best of luck, and please, come back to let us know how things work out.
