Just picked up this car, our first Volvo. Battery was dead, replaced it tried starting after replacement and smoke from the starter area and no starter spin. While waiting for time to replace the starter cleaned the interior put the windows down. tried to turn the ignition on to put the windows up and the key spins everything is dead. Cant even shift. Put the jump box on it thinking the new battery might be dead, still nothing. Whats going on?

 

Hi Kurt, welcome to the forum.

You have 1 of 3 problems, a bad ignition switch (I have a spare), a broken ignition shaft, or a bad ignition key receiver. This might help you trouble shoot.
