Default Cooling Fan Keeps Running

2000 V70 XC . I suspect a problem with the cooling fan timer, but not sure where to find it. If the fan is triggered, it will keep running for around 12 - 15 minutes after the motor is turned off. The fan is only triggered if the car has been driven long or hard before shutdown, which suggests the switch is OK, but it's only meant to run for 3 or 6 minutes according to Volvo documentation. This extended run-time may be responsible for short battery life, and I don't need to be buying another new one in 15 months. Any thoughts, ideas? Where is the timer, or is it integrated with the relay?

I just had this same problem in my 98 V70 yesterday. I got home from work and it ran for 5-10 minutes after shut down. I suspected that it was the Blower motor resistor. So i unplugged the fan and let it sit for a while. Then i plugged it back in and it went way. I'm not for sure that it is fully fixed but the fan stops when the car is shut off. Hope that helps.

I had the exact problem a little while ago but it actually wasn't the fan causing it to run longer. Instead, it was the coolant temperature sensor and the thermostat. Are there any check engine lights?

Default I feel your pain man!

I am having this problem too. I live in a cold climate and if the fan runs when I shut it off, then runs when I turn it on the next morning, it will not start if the temperature is below freezing. If I turn the car off and the fan goes off immediately, it will start the next morning regardless of temperature. I bought a new engine coolant temp sensor and tried plugging it in (not installed)when it would not start but the fan still ran and it still wouldn't start. Once it warmed up outside, it started and the problem cleared and went away for about a month. The fan started running again this week. I checked the last 4 engine codes. P0116 (engine coolant sensor), P0455 (replaced a bad MAF last fall), P0172 (had this for years) and P0102 (Not sure???) Any Experts on here that have any ideas on this? I've been fighting this for several winters now.

Coolant temp sensor. I'd install it.
