Not true. Ford had no influence on anything until the P1 and P3 platform. And even then, those were not built by Ford.

Yeah, I wasn't clear. Volvo, aka Ford, advising us to fill our crankcases with traditional motor oil, not the synthetic. The traditional seems to cause sludging in more cases than not.
Well, the letter Volvos from '99 and up... they don't own them anymore, and they didn't own them until mid-1999. And like ES6T said, they didn't build them.
My manual says conventional as well, but I use synthetic now. The PO was using conventional AFAIK, but a car like this with 170k miles shouldn't be running on conventional if you ask me.

Glove Test: Inflated upon cranking, promptly deflated. I don't know if the glove was blown out of the hole. I do know the glove didn't pop.

Coolant Test: Light amber color; unsure if smell is off. As before, I don't think oil is getting in there but I could be wrong. The coolant is at the low line but it hasn't overheated and it could be that it needed to be topped off. I don't believe either garage added any. An oversight?

Oil Level: All the oil disappeared, either burned or slipped into the nethers.

Blue/White Smoke: Like an old GD'd hippy.

I've read through most of this and can only pass this along.

Every used car I have bought, no matter what the PO says or what kind of records they kept, the first thing I do is change all the fluids. I never assume they took good care of it.

Hope this helps in future purchases.
