Unhappy Fuel Pump V70R $2,200 WTF???

Hey guys, I could really use some advice. My car is sitting at a little porcshe/bmw/volvo shop with an estimate of $2,200 to change the fuel pump. It's a 98 V70R. I love the car and just put $1200 into it. It's pretty much all been maintained and has 168k, so it's worth keeping.
They said they have to drop the subframe, suspennsion, exhaust, and gas tank to get to it, and charge a couple hundred I think for a "rust" fee in case they run into rusty bolts. WTF??? I said I thought there was access to if from the top through the floor, he says his tech with 50 years experience says it doesn't have an access from the top. I think he may be not sure and hasn't looked, or maybe he is sure and is being honest? They seem pretty honest, but I swear I saw the top of the fuel pump a couple years ago when I had the back carpet out changing the fuel filter. they have checked the relays and fuses and all are good.

I also called another place, Eurotech Sabb, and they guy says it's 8 hrs labor ( which would be about $800), but he read me the instructions for the R model and he says it looks pretty simple, involving only taking out the back carpet and seats. He said I should just do it myself, but he wasn't real sure because of course he doesn't have many of these cars come in.

THEN, he called me back and said it has two parts and u can't do it all from the top, and there IS an option to cut a hole in the floor and get to if that way and make it a 3 hour job. Has anyone done this? Has anyone changed one of these themselves? They said it's in two parts, you can't access the other part on the awd without cutting a hole or removing the whole back end of the car underneath and drop the tank. I thought this car was going to run forever... I'm not sure I want to deal with it anymore, but I've gone this far so...

Thanks for reading.

I see a writeup for cutting the hole but the pics are blurry I can't open them. If anyone has a link to this procedure that would be great. Thanks again.
