Default Rear Drive shaft Center Support Bearing bad

Just go my 98 V70 back from the shop. They told me I have a bad bearing support and gave me a qoute of $1196 to fix. Is this normal or high? How hard is this to fix myself? Lastly, should I just put the bearing in or order a reman driveshaft with the bearing from a site like www.coloradodriveshaft.com?

It is quite simple to change the driveshaft. Colorado driveshaft has excellent "how to" instructions. I replaced mine last year for around $460. I have read how some people buy the bearing and have a machine shop install it on the shaft. If your mechanic said it was the bearing support then it may be the rubber donut (dampener) the bearing sits in. They wear out and let the drive shaft flop around, especially on turns and when accelerating. My rubber mounting got trashed because the u-joint on the shaft seized up and the shaft had to bend (make angles) somewhere , so the rubber took a thrashing. Very easy to inspect the bearing support for damage, just crawl under and look. I wasn't aware of the bad u-joint till I got the shaft out. Colorado rebuilt came with new u-joint, bearing, rubber dampener ring. I found it was my best choice instead of finding & buying the parts and paying machine shop services while still removing and reinstalling the shaft myself. Either way you should inspect the damage for yourself or be shown the damage to make sure it gets done right. good luck

I've also used Colorado Driveshaft. The price is under $500 for a reconditioned shaft, which comes ready to install using your old bolts. I believe that is the price after they give you a $50 refund for sending them your old shaft. The shaft can be installed in about an hour with the most difficult part of the job being preparing your car so that you can lie underneath it to remove the old shaft and mount the new one. You'll probably need to be able to turn the rear wheels in order to align the shaft with the rear differential flange. If you can lift the car enough to get under it (safely) and if you have a set of basic metric wrenches, this is an easy job that you will save a lot on by doing it yourself.
