Default 1999 v70xc transmission problem

I bought about 2 years ago the above without the rear drive shaft and the transmission just quit. When it get's hot it stops like you put it in neutral and only takes 1-2 miles for this. My question is two fold--Is it the transmission or ? If it is the trans that needs replacement could I replace it with a front wheel drive trans that is about 1/2 the cost?? This is a 2.4 liter with turbo. In addition there are more fwd trans available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay I've looked into this myself and my guess (guess) is that it will work. It's the same transmission 50-42LE four speed without the output shaft for the rear drive. I have never tested this and I know this question has come up in the past on the forum. Keep in mind you will need a transmission from 1999-2000 S70 or V70 to match the electronics. Now what I don't know about this change over is are there any electronics that are different between the XC70 transmission and V70 / S70 FWD transmission. I'm thinking there are no differences and I think it will work and you are right it's about $250 for the front wheel drive transmission compared to $500 for the AWD. I've done the transmission swap myself (same AWD transmission) so let me know if you need any help. Let us know how it goes.
