Default Fuel pumps

I have a 2000 v70xc 2.4 turbo with 207k. I have a crank but no start. Here iswhat I have so far. I checked the crank sensor, maf, pump pressure. If I jump the pump, I get 5 lbs. I have to leave it running for a couple of mins to get enough to run, about 30lbs. Spec is 54lbs I belive.. obviously pump is in question or fuel filter. Im going to change it anyway. Heres my question,
Which pump is the main pump and how does the whole system work. The pumps are idendical and I wanted to know how they work. Are they stand alone, is the left side pump just a transfer pump,? I know the right one(passenger side) has the sender unit on it..
