Default 2003 V70 electric cooling fan runs continuously and kills battery

Anyone experienced this and/or have suggestions on how to troubleshoot it?

After driving the car a few days ago, I noticed the cooling fan running after I exited the car,.....and again about a half hour (or more) later,...meant to grab the key and have a look, but got distracted and forgot to go back to it. Next morning the near new battery was completely flat.

I took the battery out and gave it a full restore/recharge and today put it back in the car,...............large arc as I connected the battery cables and the cooling fan came on immediately confirming that this was most likely the cause of the dead battery.

Suggestions?
Engine coolant temperature sensor. Engine computer still thinks it's really hot and is trying to cool it down. I'd expect the car to run poorly when cold in such a situation however.

Default Update

Replaced the cooling fan assembly yesterday; about a 30 minute job. Problem is fixed.

So was there a relay that had the contacts shorted? Just wondering how the motor got power to run continuously.

There is an integral switching module on the fan. Apparently a circuit does the switching, and it fuses in the closed circuit mode. Gotta buy the entire fan to fix it.
$115 and 30 minutes to fix.

Thanks for the update. Good grief. Sometimes it seems like Volvo just has to be different from everybody else...in unnecessary ways.

The reason there is a fan control module is to allow the fan to be controlled from 0-100% with a pulse width modulated signal. Other cars use relays, such as a high speed and low speed. This only allows two different speeds as opposed to a pulse width modulated signal which can control it at any speed.
