Default adding roof rails

I just picked up a '02 V70 and want to add roof rails. I seems that you have to cut off some of the molding to access the mounting points. What I'm trying to find out is if I can just go to the junk yard and pick up a set of rails or if I need to find a new set. Basically, can you reuse/easily replace mounting hardware or is a one and done deal for the rails?

You can reuse old rails and hardware. The aluminum roof inserts need to be removed and cut to fit....carefully. When I did mine, I "practiced" on the passenger side first. It came out fine, but I learned to be gentle cutting aluminum. Take your time and cut it slowly or bending and twisting will distort the surface. Be careful with the clips that hold the moulding in place. I reused mine, but I can see how they could be brittle and difficult to reuse. I pulled the moulding off the clips from the rear and left the front at the windshield still attached. Then I laid a blanket on the car to protect the finish. I "marked" the cut points with masking tape in order to get sections of moulding that fit between the screw-down plates in the roof. When I was done I had three little sections "left-over".

I think I understand most of what you're saying, but I'm not sure what the aluminum plates that you're talking about are. Do you know of a tutorial or pictures I could take a look at?
