Default can smell exhaust in the car

I have just bought a 2010 v70 1.6 v70 SE D drive. It drives superbly, but we can smell exhaust in the car. We have had a couple of issues with the car, and I suspect this problem is linked.

1. Initially we have an 'engine system service required 'error and the car needed a new differential pressure sensor.
2. Within a couple of days we had an another error message. This time it was the DPF. The mechanic drilled through the manifold and flushed clean the DPF with 4TEC.(stopping up the hole with a screw).

Now the car goes beautifully, but we have an exhaust smell. If we shut off the fan and the air from the outside vents, there are no fumes inside. (fine in summer with the windows open, not sensible all year round!)

I know nothing about mechanics, but suspect that one or two of you experts can recommend the next step to stop the fumes ?

Thanks

1) See if the seal where the steering column goes through the firewall / floor is intact. This is an easy visual check and is one I just read about.

2) Check under-hood for a disconnected PCV hose. This happened to my Mom's car and the poisonous stink was intolerable.

3) Are you sure it's exhaust smell? Oil spillage / leakage could be smoking somewhere ON YOUR ENGINE then be sucked into the cabin.

4) In the case of exhaust leaks there's usually a telltale rumble. Inspect the system anyway. The flex joint could be leaking. They do wear out.

Double check the drilled hole screw plug and make sure that it is sealing. Does it smell like raw diesel exhaust or treated tailpipe diesel exhaust?

Thank you for that - we did wonder if it might be the screw plug. I will ask the garage to check when I can get there. It must be somewhere near the air intake for the car ventilation (which we have turned off at present).

What is a "drilled hole screw plug"? ...a diesel thing?

Drilled hole--the one their mechanic drilled in their manifold.
Screw plug--their mechanic screwed a screw or bolt into the drilled hole to try and seal so exhaust does not leak out.
