Default can smell exhaust in the car

I have just bought a 2010 v70 1.6 v70 SE D drive. It drives superbly, but we can smell exhaust in the car. We have had a couple of issues with the car, and I suspect this problem is linked.

1. Initially we have an 'engine system service required 'error and the car needed a new differential pressure sensor.
2. Within a couple of days we had an another error message. This time it was the DPF. The mechanic drilled through the manifold and flushed clean the DPF with 4TEC.(stopping up the hole with a screw).

Now the car goes beautifully, but we have an exhaust smell. If we shut off the fan and the air from the outside vents, there are no fumes inside. (fine in summer with the windows open, not sensible all year round!)

I know nothing about mechanics, but suspect that one or two of you experts can recommend the next step to stop the fumes ?

Thanks

I responded to this post in a "parallel thread".

I do not know how an answered post comes up as having no responses.

Thank you very much

I saw (and have printed off) your reply and will use it when I take the car to the local garage later this week (for the 4th time in the past month)

I am assuming that a leak in the exhaust manifold is also a possibility...
