Considering '01 XC70?
I've owned a '97 850 sedan for several years now but have wanted a wagon for quite awhile. I came across a 2001 XC70 being sold locally by a private seller. I have done some research and read that the transmissions in these are awful—the XC70 I'm eyeing is high-mileage (200k) but looks to be in tip-top shape and appears extremely well-taken-care of. The owner had the transmission replaced within the last couple of years. I believe the car has been kept up by the local Volvo dealership as well.
I am a bit hesitant given the reputation of this particular year after reading so much about all of the transmission problems. Is one of these worth the gamble, or would I be better off sticking with my 850?
I am supposed to give the car a test drive tonight and likely may not get a response in time, but I am curious and wanted input/things to consider.

The transmission in these is not "awful". It is an AW55-50 made by Asin which happens to be the largest producers of transmissions worldwide. The fact that it has gone 200k miles should tell you something.
Many of these transmissions end up with faults in the shift solenoids where dirt and debris cause them to stick when warm. The solution is a fluid drain/fill and new solenoids. The cost of the repair is now less than $200 DIY.
There are plenty of people who will declare this transmission to be a failure but it is not. However, do what you feel is appropriate.

76 days since your test drive....how'd it go?
The trannies are OK.
Ford added a damaging feature called "stop-neutral" which forced the unit to be slammed into gear when a light turned green.
Also, Volvo was still pushing the idea of lifelong fluid.
Both were stupid ideas.
"Your" transmission is new. It's not going to be a problem.
Let's just see how long it'll take the OP to return to this thread.
My money's on never.
