there are two lights on the dash - one is a service interval reminder light, the other is a check engine light. Check the owners manual (its available online) to know which you are looking at. If it is in fact the check engine light, it simply means you have a stored fault code, so the next step is to use an OBD2 code reader to read all the stored codes. You can find a cheap device (say $30 US) that will read the powertrain "P" codes which are most common. It will plug into the OBD2 port under the dash (left side ? ) - kind of looks like an old school printer port, about 3" x 1/2" wide. Plug in, turn the key to position 2 (dash lights on, engine off) and the device will prompt you to view codes. Write down all that you find, then use the device to clear the codes. If something is truly amiss, the codes will return (some need about 200 miles of driving, others will reset immediately). You can post up or google for info on the codes you find for some coaching and next steps. Keep in mind, codes just tell you a clue as to what electrical signals were found - they don't tell you directly what to fix so think of this as the first step in the triage process. You can probably get a friendly shop to read the codes or find a big store which will loan a code reader if you don't buy your own.

As to your observation on a vacuum line being blocked, best to check the vacuum line diagram - sometimes the ports are intentionally blocked. Look for torn lines, cracked or torn boots or wide open ports where a line may have fallen off.

Service vehicle now message appeared yesterday on starting the car up; first time since Saturday. Did various stop/starts and it did t appear again. Did a code read on it when I got home but no codes came up. Husband used car this morning and it appeared again in start up but didn’t reappear when he started it again after turning it off for a bit. Any ideas. No loss of power. Astra GTC SRI 1.6t.

See prior post on the diff between a check engine light and the service interval reminder. Google to find the owners manual to make sure which one you are looking at. Also Google for a service reminder reset procedure specific to your model and year. My bet is you are look at the service reminder.
