Default URGENT Help needed...Massive Oil leak

Hello,

Would appreciate some expert advice please.

I have a 2002 Volvo V70 Station Wagon, Non Turbo. 167K miles. Owned it for about 3 years.

I've done ALL of my oil and filter changes and about 95% of the maintenance myself on this and other cars.

Car was running well then I changed the Oil and filter yesterday and all was going well.

No leaks.

Today I drove it 20 miles, then saw big leaks under car. Opened the hood and there is Oil (Fresh clean oil) on the lower hoses and lower parts of car. Passenger side wheel well and tire. Oil on the parts under the car.

I checked the drain plug it seemed tight and no leaks. I see the plastic oil filter canister has drips coming from it.

It is possible that I cracked the black plastic filter canister when I tightened it and when the car is under load, the oil sprays everywhere ??

Or is it something else ??

Car runs and drives fine. Oil dip stick has oil at the half mark. I parked the car and didn't drive it.

I ordered a filter canister replacement (will pick it up in the morning)...I assume and hope that is all it is.

Is it normal to have this much Oil everywhere ?

The Engine oil cap and dip stick were both tight...I checked.

I NEVER had this issue before. Are these plastic things easy to crack ?? I assume this is the original one.

Is there anything else I should check.....Hoses (I can't find anything broken or loose), is there an Oil pressure sensor that maybe broke ?

REALLY REALLY appreciate the help with photos and diagrams if possible, please.

Thank you.

Not sure if I can be much help as my mechanic does most - but I’ve had to replace the gasket over the drain plug every change as it gets weak after undone.
probably best thing I’ve done is clean it all off, drive a short distance and check where it’s coming from. If it’s sprayed all over the place it’s likely the canister as you said - something under pressure.

The Oil is allover the place. There is much oil on the passenger side front tire on the wheel itself and the wheel well too.....It is close to where the filter is located thus I assume this the cause.

Is it thick and goopy? If so, its possible the CV boot has a rip and shot the grease everywhere. There's a metal shield around the boot, if you have all grease there, that's probably the cause. Cracking a oil filter housing is certainly possible, they are plastic after all. And under pressure they can definitely spray the oil. When the car is not running, the oil level won't be high enough to get into the filter housing. This is the exact reason I keep an extra in my trunk.

Like Mark said, I replace all O-rings and gaskets at every oil change. Drain plug washer, fill cap gasket, and canister o-ring.

Did the o-ring come dislodged on the filter housing?

I had the same type of oil leak in my 02 v70 xc which turned out to be the exhaust cam seal
it's not that hard to replace
there are some good videos of how it's done on youtube
