V70 instrument cluster DIM needs to be repaired does not work intermittently
Just wanted to post a note that I had a problem with the instrument panel/gauge cluster. My 2003 Volvo V70 instrument cluster would go on and off with no pattern, just randomly. All gauges and lights would shut off.
Easy solution!!! I used European Electric in Tennessee [www.europeanelectric.net] [phone: 615-330-8279] and the problem was solved. I called EE and David explained that the DIM circuit boards were made in Taiwan and are faulty. The solder cracks and the circuit breaks intermittently. I shipped the cluster to EE and they clean and re-solder everything for less than $200 (as of 2017), and return ship it. Removing the cluster was extremely easy.
There is a good video on YouTube at:
The plastic trim around the cluster pops off no problem. Then there are just 4 Torx (25) screws. Remove the cluster and disconnect the wiring harness. Make sure it is well-padded when you ship it. The whole process took about 1 week. Note: I had to disconnect the batter because when I removed the DIM, interior lights stayed on (?). Anyhow, highly recommend European Electric!
