08 XC70 Groaning noise when turning
My XC70 is making a groaning sound along with feeling a slight shuddering from the steering wheel when I turn the wheel approaching full turn in either direction, forward or reverse. Most evident when pulling in or out of a perpendicular parking space. Recently hearing a bit of a clunking noise when going over a bump slowly. My go-to shop (not an import specialist) checked all the front suspension components and didnt find anything out of order. 103k miles on car. Im guessing maybe struts? Want to be sure before ordering (pricey) parts. Any other thoughts? I dont have an import car specialist in my town.
sounds like it could be an axle / CV joint if the noise persists when you stop turning the steering wheel. If it groans while turning the steering then I'd suspect the strut mount/bushing/bearing. I had the groaning while turning the steering wheel and fixed it by replacing the strut mounts/bearings.
Excessive bouncing or difficulty in rebounding could really mean worn or failing struts.
But I'd also look at rear shocks, control arms, or bushings. And check the tie rod ends and ball joints.
Plus, pay attention to the power steering system. If it makes groaning noises when you turn, it could be low on fluid or the pump might be failing.
And, as it was mentioned, check the CV joints and axles.
