DIM instrument cluster - unplug and fans go on without key?
Hi there-
I have a faulty DIM (no gauges working) and was going to send it to a rebuild shop. With the key out of the ignition, I disconnected the DIM. I then thought, "hmm.. I wonder if I can drive without it?" So I started it up and decided, yes, it could be done. I then turned it off and walked away. I came back an hour later and sat inside the car, contemplating my phone as most of us do, and then heard something. I looked at the climate panel and saw that the fan was on. Without the key in! I then cranked up the AC and it then powered off. Strange.
So, I am thinking I may have to NOT drive my car while the instrument cluster is away getting repaired. I may have to disconnect the battery to keep it from draining..
Anyone heard of this happening?
Thanks,
Mark

I am wondering if the issue is not the DIM but the Central Electronic Module.
There is a good article that explains the symptoms here: https://www.youcanic.com/guide/inter...rical-problems

Hmm. In the time between my post and now, I did send my DIM in as I'm fairly certain it's bad. The electrical problems on it (clock running up and run down) are not so much intermittent as persistent. Over the past 7 or so years I've had it, the dealership has looked into odd audio crackles that come from the stereo speakers when the wiper handle gets pulled into wash mode. Could be related but I would hope that the mechanic looked at the connections.
Then again.. I could be wrong about the DIM and will be out some $ but, still less than the dealer (more than the car's worth, I'd say). No matter what I will check out the CEM connections for corrosion and will follow the procedures on that website if need be. Much appreciated !!
