I recently carried out an oil change in my 2012 XC70 D5 2.4 215hp. Refilled with 5.5ltrs of oil as recommended. I found it frustrating that I couldn’t check the oil level immediately. You have to drive 30km before the automatic level indication will function. The level showed the oil to be midway between the min/max level.
So I decided to fit a dipstick purchased of eBay sold buy a Volvo dealer. After fitting, the oil level only just left a mark on the dipstick, well short of the minimum mark.
As mentioned the automatic system showed the level half way between max/min. No oil level warnings at all. The dipstick is part 31316562. Any comments.
Assume you filled with the correct amount of oil required when doing a filter change - If you put the correct amount of oil in, then the dipstick is wrong... Which engine code do you have? If you have 5.5L in there you should be fine and then let the level indicator report back.
That stick along with a 31375301 tube fits 3 diesel engine variants. D5244 t11, 15 and 17. Did you install the tube also? The D5204t3 (~2liter) uses a 31330356 dipstick.
Thanks for the reply. I refilled with 5.5 litres as this is what the Volvo dealer has charged me for on all previous service sheets! Having read my manual I note that my XC70 should have approximately 5.9 litres! This would explain why the electronic measurement is not indicating full. Engine code is D5244 T 15
Thanks for your help and the diagram. My engine is a D5244 T 15, so the parts I used are correct. Just found out from my manual that I should have used 5.9 litres not 5.5 litres of engine oil. As previously mentioned the electronic measurement showed the level midway between the max/min marks, so an extra 0.4 litres should take it up to max. The dipstick I fitted isn’t even up to the minimum mark, so I doubt the extra will take it to the max mark! I will update you later. If the two levels don’t match, which do you believe, the dipstick or the electronic measurement?
GIven you've measured what's appropriate to your engine, I'd compare the electronic measure to the dipstick to see which says your 100% full.. I'd have no reason to believe the electronic measure is off vs an add on dip stick which may or may not be accurate.
I have the exact same problem. I think it is possible via a scan tool or VIDA to calibrate the automatic system I have not tried yet.
I have believed at the automatic until now and just addede the dipstick in case the automatic by error tells me that the level is too low. Then I have the dipstick to be sure.
I think I will try to calibrate one day
