Default Factory Trailer Wiring Harnes Question

Does anyone know if you have to have the computer system of the Volvo (XC70) programmed in order for the factory Trailer wiring harness work? I was going to get the Volvo harness but using an aftermarket hitch. I asked the Volvo dealer about the harness and they told me it that the car has to be programmed to work. Not sure if this is true. Only the ones who have used it can say.

They charge $110 just to program plus the cost of the harness which is around $140.

I can answer this now. At least for my XC the OEM harness is plug n play.

I want to install a hitch to my 07 too: What class rate of your hitch? Who made and where you bought it? So you don't need to program to use the trailer harness. Thanks Voldog.

I got the class 2 hitch from eTrailer. The class is determined by the towing capacity of the vehicle. I went with the Curt hitch and got the OEM harness from FCP. All easy to install. And yes, the harness worked right away.

Thanks goodness! The dealer try to pick your pocket. It's a shame.

Y'all... Just go to eTrailer.com and put in your car info and it will give you the hitch that you need. And if you go to FCP or IPD and do the same thing it should give you the OEM trailer harness for your vehicle if it's available.

If you have a Volvo connector in the trunk it should be plug n play based on my experience.

I actually called UHaul initially inquiring about the hitch but they wanted too much money. The hitch is not difficult to put in. And delivery is free from eTrailer. I opted for the OEM harness bc I don't want to splice into the wires.

Were you connecting to a trailer hitch with a 7 wire plug?
