why would the axle pop out of the socket or why would the brakes not work? Two unrelated issues - the axle may have lost its retaining clip when it became unseated due to the torque or it was loose and the splines got damaged allowing it to slip. As to the brakes not working, even if the axle wacked a brake line or took out the wheel sensor, the other brake circuit (cars have a dual diagonal hydraulic system) would work. Only way I can think of a total brake failure would be a component that is related to both circuits - ie the pedal mechanism to the master, the master cylinder went dry on both sides or the ABS valve body totally froze or you damaged both circuits. all of these are extremely rare events.
