Default Key FOB replacement

I just purchased a 2004 XC 70. They only gave me one key. The stealer wants $400 for a replacement. There has to be a cheaper way to get a new key cut and a new FOB. Any ideas??

It is no longer 1974 and the $3.00 key is long gone. Why would you refer to your local dealer as a "stealer"? They are pricing the part based upon Volvo's schedule, not theirs.

You people amaze me. Why not open your own dealership and show 'em how its done?

That was really helpful..... They arent asking for a $3.00 key, just asking if there are any options less expensive than $400. a non-reply on your part would have been better than this trash you posted

The problem you have is that the keys aren't just "cut", inside your key fob is a programmable computer chip that works in conjunction with your key to deactivate the security features as well as turn on your lights in your side view mirrors and unlock/lock your doors. If you were looking to replace a broken key fob that still worked but say, the spring broke, there are videos on Youtube that show you how to fix this, but for an extra key? Might want to "shop around to different dealers they might have a SLIGHT variance in price but there's no real "cheap" way to get an extra key made

I hope that this explanation as to why the key costs so much is more helpful than that other person's post.

I'd like to know why so many Volvo owners have no fobs and keys available when they sell their cars! I just bought an 04 xc70 with 1 service key. The car is so mint, I'm going to do the dealer thing and pay the $800+ to clean out the old data and program some new keys and remotes. Yeah, it sucks, but only because the car is mint.

In my case they only could find one. They had both but one was missing.
