Hi all,

Wife's 04 XC70 began making a grinding noise while in motion. Put it in the air today and found that I can grab / shake the drive shaft at the forward most point and observe a tremendous amount of slop where the shaft exits the bevel gear. It is also leaking fluid past the seal due to the excessive play.
My questions are:
1. Can the play be removed by dropping the drive shaft and torquing the yoke nut? Of course, this would done after removing and replacing the bad seal.
2. If option 1 is not viable, does anyone have any experience or ideas as to what failed? And, how to proceed?

I have spent an hour searching the web with no results.
