Rear Differential toast on 01 V70XC
I have an 01 V70 XC with 131k miles. I am the original owner and I have taken better than average care of the car. I am as certain as I can be that the rear diff is shot. Had it up on the rack with all wheels spinning and listened with an automotive stethescope. Quiet at the wheels and screaming at the differential. New differential is out of the question budget wise. Although the car is in decent shape I have enough known issues with it that I dont want to spend more than required.
All that being said I have pretty much decided just to have the drive shaft removed. The unfortunate part is that it only has 1500 miles on it (the drive shaft that is). Is there anyone with an 01xc70 that has done this or that knows how this is to be done? I am starting with a new mechanic for this job and the way he described it the drive shaft comes out and the rear CV joints are disconnected from the differential otherwise the rear end will continue to spin. My car is rare in southwest Florida and this guy has never done this job on this car. There is only one Volvo specialist and he is too far away to deal with.
Are the cv joints destroyed by this job? I know that if the driveshaft itself was the only problem I would only need to pull the shaft. Since it is the differential that is the problem I am concerned that there is more to this.
Any advise that can be offered is greatly appreciated.

I have same V70XC 2001 but it is my driveshaft that is shaking, clunking, and screeching. I have other problems keeping me from getting emissions inspection.
So I may need a driveshaft if you pull yours or may just part out mione and have differential and a lot else available.
Please keep me posted on your progrerss.
