Default XC70 FM radio goes on and off

A couple of days ago my 650 system radio stopped working. Changed stations, still nothing. Rebooted, still nothing. Stopped the car and turned off the ignition, turned it back on -- still nothing. BUT CD player works and AM works -- it's just the FM that doesn't. I leave it on when I turn off the ignition. Now, it comes on for a few seconds or minutes, long enough to hear half an NPR news item, and then it quits again. I have a couple of long drives ahead of me and the lack of a radio is very inconvenient. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Edited to add that this is a 2005 XC 70 AWD. I believe the antenna is circuits pasted to the driver side cargo area window, not the kind that goes up and down. I had just gone out for an errand, after a 5-hour drive the day before. Did not move seats or anything after we got here, but I did fiddle with the mid-level tone control at some point.

Have you attempted to adjust the volume on the radio while on the FM band by only using the volume control on the steering wheel? Additionally, once you think you have the volume up sufficiently using the volume control on the steering wheel, use the upper control on the steering wheel to scan to the next preset station. My experience is that I have had a couple of these radios loose the ability to control volume with the volume **** that is part of the radio. That is why I make the above suggestion.

Does the radio display the frequency station changing when pushing the next preset station button?

It doesn't seem to be a volume issue -- the sound just isn't there. And when it does come on periodically for some arbitrary short period of time, the volume level is fine, and the dashboard control works as it should. The scan buttons work, too, when it decides to be on. When it is silent, the radio display shows the station and the program just fine -- it thinks it is on even when there is no sound.

When there is no FM sound, the AM radio still works fine, and the CD player sound works fine, too.

Angry XC70 FM radio audio cuts out

Just wondering if you ever found the source of this problem.
I have the same issue: Everything works apart from FM, which cuts in and out with cracks or just nothing. Scan finds and displays the stations, which suggests the RF side is OK, ie antenna etc. I suspect it's a fault in the audio circuit or FM decoder. Not really sure how to proceed, other than buying a new radio.

Nope, my mechanic couldn't find anything to fix (a Swedish car specialist, they only do Saabs and Volvos). Eventually they found a used radio and installed it. It's not as nice as the original but it does work. So far.

Good luck!

Well, sh*t. I've got to tear apart the dash to get in and screw around with the heater core and I was hoping while I was in there I could just... plug something back in or something. I'm glad to know this is a common problem and I'm not doing something wrong.
