Question Any alarm/remote start gurus here...?

I know this is probably a shot in the dark, but what the heck...

One of the previous owners of my 850 Wagon had a Viper 160XV installed and I just noticed one issue with it.

The remote lock/unlock works fine, but the remote start is acting up. It will start up, but then dies about 2-3 seconds later. Same thing happens no matter how many times I start it.

What could cause this? Any alarm/remote start gurus here...? I have Googled a bit on this, but nobody seems to have the same exact issue...

Im not sure exactly how it is setup but seems like something it telling the alarm something is wrong and that's why it is shutting off.
Like hitting the brake pedal with shut the car off if the key is not in there. SO something like that may be shutting it off.

Tech is on the right track, it is hard to say what is exactly wrong when the car is not in front of you. When remote starter is activated and shuts down. The alarm will light up the alarm LED in a sequence telling you what shut it down. This table is in the install manual and could probably be googled if you do not have a manual. Directed normally keeps manuals on their site if the unit is not too old.
If you are not electronically inclined then I would advise that you have someone else test each connection:
tach connection
brake shutoff input
hi current wires going to key cylinder wires for proper activation
Just have to go through it one wire at a time, good luck.

sounds to me like it may not be reading that the car is running. Often a tach signal is run on a car from the alarm to the engine, so that the alarm knows the car is running. i would look for a wire that goes from the alarm module to the engine bay. If that is not cut, split, broken, then you can reprogram that to the alarm module. you may have to contact viper for programing sequence, or search the net to find a manual that tells you how to.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to download an installation manual, but I'm not very good with any kind of electrical stuff, so I will have to take my time to figure this one out.

I haven't even looked for the main alarm module yet, either...

If it was not reading the tach signal correctly it would most likely continue to crank for the complete start sequence or if it was going into over rev protection then TexFinn would note that the vehicle revs very high and proceeds to shut down. Programming the tach signal involves starting the car, press and hold valet switch till the units LED light goes on constant, release switch, done. Counting the LED flashes after trying to start the vehicle is the first step to solving the problem, otherwise you are just randomly hunting down wires and looking for a fault.

true, though some of the newer code units will run for a minute then shut down. and tach programing for a pursuit is much different then just pressing the black button. you have to enter a programing mode then proceed to the proper menu option.

Original post is for a DEI 160XV, and not a Code or a Pursuit model. I would not confuse Tex on units and procedures that do not pertain to his/her particular situation.

was simply trying to point out that there are many differences, despite the fact there are few manufactures. Often programing is changed from year to year. sorry for my 2cents if it was confusing.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding your 2 cents for any topic. Just pointing out to Tex that the tach learn procedure I posted was for that specific model. I have no doubt that the issue can be resolved once Tex starts to dig into the wires. I have installed many DEI remote starts/alarms and am currently integrating one on my coupe with a ton of custom add ons, so the wiring is familiar to me.

I don't think the alarm is doing fine, there's something wrong with that alarm.
Basically I don't know how to setup an car alarm system.
I just know how to fix them if it has been remove.
