So I've tried a 4" spkr in the door of my 84 240dl and it doesnt fit the mounting holes, also noticed that the oem spkr mount projects the speaker out away from the door about 1/2' will i need to get an adapter plate to fit these hole's or is the another way around it any help would be great.

 

If you can find an adapter, that would probably be the best. Other wise I would put some foam around the edge of the speaker (New speakers usually come with some) and make some new holes. 4" is the correct size speaker so you'll have to be creative to find a way to make it work I guess.

 

i made a custom adapter from 1/8 board and mounted on the outside of the door skin, will reinstall with a proper plastic adapter ring when I can find one here

 

I had to do the same thing. Problem with Volvo speaker requirements is that you can't just buy any 4" speaker....the mounting depths on most of them are too deep. Infinity sells them with 1 13/16" depth with is just enough to squeak 'em in the doors. Althought, if you're handy with wood working you can do what Kaspir and I did....it'll look something like this (Maybe a little better....I rushed mine):
