Navigation? 2006 XC90
Used, came with the DVD nav system but no DVDs. I'm wondering what years and model DVDs can I use (2003 Hundai?) or are they year and model specific. Do I need the original DVDs for the update (2012)?
Also since the nav is pretty much a black screen with "Insert DVD" I wouldn't mind opinions and alternatives (aftermarket) to throw my money at instead of update DVDs.

If you want to use the factory nav, you can purchase the newest maps discs from navigation.com or from the dealer. Either will cost $199.
For about half that amount you can get a decent stand-alone gps with lifetime map updates.
If cost is higher on your priority list than having the most recent maps, try ebay:
volvo navigation in Car Electronics | eBay
If you go the ebay route, watch closely because not all are compatible and there are two multiple discs depending on the version (east US and west US). Make sure you get the version that meets your needs. If you get it from the dealer you will get the most current version that is compatible, without doubt.

The thing is I'd really like to SEE the system on before spending $200. Or at least have ONE person say "I love it" or "I hated it"; not that I can't find several of both opinions online. The dealer and craigslist have both been worthless.
The other problem with the Garmin or whatever (we have one temporarily now) is routing the power cord- it's just across the radio panel like badly hung Christmas lights. I'm sure I could fix that, but I'm not as keen on tearing up the dash as I would be in a Ford or Jeep.

I bought a 2003 disk off of eBay- totally outdated but I never heard the factory nav was terrible so I had to spend the money to find out. The worst part is I burned a gold copy and it worked perfectly, so someone could have taken five minutes to help me test it and nobody did.
The factory nav is terrible, indeed and I've only had it on to show my wife how terrible. I haven't done anything with the screen- backup camera screens are so cheap these days, and they're not retracted into the dash, I don't even see the point in repurposing it.
So basically what I've done is left it be a 3lb brick in the middle of the dash.
Incidentally, does anyone want to buy a 2003 volvo nav DVD?
