Default ATF verses AFT+

Hello all,
I need to add to my power steering resivour for my 1996 Volvo 850. THe manual says ATF, the old owner had synthetic power steering fluid in the back of the car which seemed wrong. However all I could find at the local auto parts store was Pronto ATF+4. Will this work? I've been reading old threads and have seen many different answers. I really don't want to add the wrong thing.

Thanks!

Both types of fluids are hydraulic fluids. You should be just fine using any type of ATF, if you're worried about it though, do a flush.

ATF +4 is mostly used in Chrysler vehicles. That's MOSTLY, not exclusively. You can likely use it without any problem but I'd try to stick with a fluid that's a little more in the same ballpark as the original Dexron II or Dex III the manual calls for (not available any longer). The standard replacement for those would be Dex/merc. If you wanted synthetic you'd likely look for Mercon V or Dexron VI.

Did you ask anyone about it at the store?? Most fluids are backwards compatible so if you needed standard ATF you can likely use Dex/Merc or a synthetic like Mercon 5. Look on the back of the bottle and make sure is lists what you are actually supposed to use unless you are following a confirmed recommendation.
