1980 244 Alternator Replacement
Hi guys,
Recently my 1980 244 broke down. Luckily I was close to home so it didn't need to get towed. So on my way home the cars lights went dim, the radio turned off, and finally it died. The battery had no charge when we tried to turn it over but when jump started it would come alive for a little while so we figured it would be the alternator that was the problem. My brother checked quick to see what he could see and when he turned the key over the AMP light did not come on so we checked the bulb in the dash and it looks to be fine. We switched bulbs from another warning light that worked and it didn't come on again. We put in another alternator that is newer from a 92' parts car we have and again the light is not coming on. The old alternator that I had before had an external regulator but I read that the newer alternators had one built in so I hooked everything up to how I saw in diagrams in my green books and how it looked in other 240's we have and left the external regulator unplugged. When I turned it over the light on the dash did not come on again and now I am stumped. All of the wires look like they are hooked up properly. The red from the battery is hooked up to the larger bolt, the ground is hooked up to the smaller bolt, and the wire that supposedly lights up the Dash AMP light is hooked up to a Male plug on the alternator. Everything is hooked up in the dash as it is supposed to be as far as I know and all of the wires in the harness seem to be okay as well. Is there anything that I could be looking over or anything I have to do differently since it is a newer style alternator?
Thanks- Sam
