Default 2004 S40 obtaining/programming a remote entry device

I have just purchased, from a private party, a 2004 S40 for my niece. I'm having to bird-dog the final pieces into place.

The car came with only one remote entry device. This is the bayonet type with a folding key. It works fine.

It's unclear to me, and I've been unable to find the information by Internet searching, what the process is for obtaining a 2nd (or even a 3rd) remote device.

I see the remotes on ebay for 25 to 30 dollars. Fine, I could obtain one or two.

Is the process then to take the car and the existing remote, and any new remotes(s) to a Volvo dealer to have

1) the remote(s) programmed to the car

and

2) the key portion cut

Is the existing remote re-programmed? (I came across one reference that claims it's actually the receiver on the car that is programmed, not the remote in your hand. At any rate, one or the other has to have something done to its internal bits.)

How many remote devices can be set up?

What is a typical fee per remote?

Will the dealer grumble that I didn't buy the extra remotes from him?

Hi,
The remotes are pre-coded at manufacture and cannot be changed. It is the car that is programmed to accept the remote.

Now it getsexpensive! The remotes come from new with a code numberwhich is destroyed when the dealer connects it to your car. Secondhand remotes are useless without this number andonly new ones in their original packing will have it.

Here in the UK programming of the car to accept the remote is controlled to the Volvo dealers and they charge for it!!! In the UK it costs about £170 to £250 for the remote and the programming.

Hopefully it is cheaper where you live?

Bob

PS. The system uses a rolling code so generic remotes that learn from a working remote is unlikely to work.

Hi all! My first post here. Last weekend I purchased a 2004 s60 2.5T AWD and am loving it. It's a great car.

I too am interested in obtaining another key/remote. I've read elsewhere that it is OK to purchase another unit of ebay and have the dealer reprogram it. Not true?

Thanks for your help. This seems like a great forum of Volvo lovers. I'm sure I'll benefit from the collective wisdom here in the days ahead.
