Hey guys, long time lurker, first time posting.

We drive a 2012 V40 D3 with 120k km.

Last august, when driving around the city I've received a "power steering service required" message WHILE driving. The wheel became almost impossible to turn. The speed was not too high, so I was able to stop safely, stop and start the engine, the error was gone.

Then, almost a year later, last week we got the same message while on highway, driving around 100km/h. My wife was driving at that time, she got really scared and barely managed to stop.

This happened again to me today when I was parking. Clearly there's an issue, and I would just go to the dealer, BUT, I live in Ukraine and the nearest official service is 200 km away. Driving there with such an issue seems a bit risky, especially if the issue is low level of steering liquid or something like that.

Can I troubleshoot this myself? It does not display when I start the car, only randomly while driving.

I would appreciate any advice.
