I was working on my car today and noticed something very unfortunate, a clean cut in a pipe I have no idea what it is.
I don't know how long it's been broken apart for as I have notice no performance issues.
What is this part and what is its purpose?
Intake air preheater tube. In most climates it's best to remove it. (If legal in your jurisdiction)
The other end is on the bottom of the air filter box - and I'd bet if you look inside the air box behind the filter - you will find a bad air box thermostat routing preheated air from that tube intake the intake all the time. (instead of just when it is below ~35 degrees)
If stuck in the hot air position - it tends to fry your air mass meter. $$$
