91 740 starting problems
Hi there, I have a 91 740 and have owned for 3 years now. Its in great condition but only has one problem. Ever since i have owned it it has had some starting problems progressively worse and worse. In the past i would just wait 10-15 min and it would start now im luck if i can even get it to start. It will most of the time or a few tries start with spraying starting fluid into the intake manifold, and once it does start it runs fine and smooth and stays running. I have replaced recently the intake fuel pump, spark plugs, wires, and distributor cap. I can hear the fuel pump working in the gas tank when I turn the ignition on. Please any ideas? this is the second 740 that has done this to me.

I would have the fuel pressure checked. I had a 740 but did not have a start problem. Does the problem only occur with the car cold, like after it has been sitting for 4+ hours? This could be a fuel pressure regulator problem or the main fuel pump could be putting less than needed pressure on the system. My guess would be the regulator is bleeding off pressure while it sits.
Does it start easy while driving it from place to place? If you drive to the store, does it start easy when you get back in the car if it has only been sitting under an hour?

It really just does it at at random. I can start it up for 3 days in a row without a problem, and then some days it wont start at all unless i spray ether into it and still even then it sometimes wont start. And like i said once it starts it runs great. It has stalled and died only twice though but have got it running after those times. I will look into that. Thanks I highly appreciate it.
