Default 93' 240 Classic Wagon

Hello All,

I have a 93' 240 Classic Wagon. The Teal Green color with the tan, pleather interior. 230/1600. We are considering selling the car, it is our primary car ( I am in grad school ). Lately we have been having to pump some money into the car and I guess my question is, should we sell it and get something newer or continue to address the problems with the current car. We bought it in California with 148,000 miles on it. It now has 168,500.

Any thoughts on what a classic goes for these days. It is in great shape for a twenty year old car, hardly any dings, interior is good only a small tear here and there. The main body paint is still like new except for some sun damage to the headlight trim and spots on the base trim. Was a California car its whole life. Has only been in New England for a year.

Any thoughts? Keep investing in this car or time to upgrade to something a little newer more fuel efficient. I was thinking a 2000-2003 v70.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

one confused volvo owner.

Great little car, low mileage but sounds sorta rough - Classics are desirable but only if reallyclean will you get a premium. The problem is that a 10 or 13 year old V70 won't be trouble free - and generally a bit more expensive to maintain. Depends on the individual cars involved of course. I would - a very rough estimate here - guess that the newer one will set you back about 2000 to 3000 more than what you get for yours. Now that many dollars will likely keep that 240 running for a good 18 to 24 months and the V70 will need - on average fron many post here - a grand a year in repair costs.

I guess I'm trying to say that the trade will cost you a few thousand and you'll still end up with an older Volvo wagon and the same, or possibly a bit more costs. As I went to grad school, and both of my children have/are, I have some idea of how tight money can be (if it wasn't you'd be toolin' around in a NEW XC90, right?) so I would keep what you have, unless you can anticipate major work.

Thanks donf,

Yep as of my last post we now have to replace a windshield and an oil pump. Mechanics are also telling me the front sway bar and bushings need replaced and the front ball joints.....and a new muffler to boot. I think this car is cursed. I have already put $3000 into it in one year. Got to the point that I have spent so much on this car, I feel like I am losing a lot of money by selling it....only to have to keep pumping money into it.

Can not believe the expenses this car has cost me. Fed up.

Flip side is, if I bought another used car, would this all happen again. Guess I should have bought a used Toyota.

-Thanks
