Default 940 engine shut down

anybody experienced bizarre symptom??
random 2/3 times a month my 92 940 wagon (non turbo) will shut off with out any warning....i coast off side freeway ..bring to a stop....wait 1/2 minutes...then it starts
a runs as if nothing happened for another week or so...
check engine light does not light up......
cleaned air flow mass meter, changed distributor cap/rotor....not sure if it is electrival or fuel
issue...???[:@]
pretty dangerous drive around like this.....local mechanics cannot troubleshoot,,,,since cannot' replicate failure so that they can find cause.......
any ideas ????

It could be anything from sensors to fuel pump intermittent problem, or fuel vapour causing air lock in the fuel line (not very likely for modern cars, though).
