Default 940 Volvo won't go into park

I know this problem has been posted before, and I've read the threads. I think my problem is different. All gears are working correctly with the shifter in the correct positions. But the lever won't go into Park. Something is stopping it (solenoid?) I've removed the console cover and I can see the override lever going up and down and the micro switch, which the lever never gets to. The manuals and adjustment articles all say to start with the shifter in Park. But mine won't go there! Any thoughts? Thanks...

Today I disconnected the linkage to the transmission so the shifter was free-wheeling. The shifter itself wouldn't go into park. The transmission would.

Have you checked the linkage under the car? My 740 had a plastic bushing that wore out once.

Yes, I did check the linkage. Even disconnected it and shifter still wouldn't go into park, although the transmission itself would. (while I was under there, I did replace the bushings.)
