98 V70 Awd... Should I Buy
Hello all, this is my first time posting here as I don't even own a Volvo... yet. I have been looking for some cheap reliable transportation that will be good for me and my family. I came across this V70 for what seems like a great deal. I am aware of Volvo's reputation for being a great reliable, safe, family oriented vehicle, which really sparked my interest when I saw this car going for 750. I was hoping I could get some opinions. I am hopefully meeting this person this evening to look at it. Here is the add:
"Mechanic Special: Runs and drives but needs some work. Black ext with tan leather interior. Auto, p/w, heated seats, cassette & CD, AWD, 5-cyl, and alloy wheels.
Body and interior in good shape. 168,000. Brand new $400 tires. What it needs: A/C quit. P/S leaks. Driver's side front caliper sticks will need replaced. Radiator has a slow leak. Small oil leak.
Caliper on the internet is around $40. I don't know if stop leak with help radiator. Serpentine belt will need replaced soon but works fine now."
So, what are your opinions? I am fairly capable of working on vehicles. The caliper should be no problem, I could probably fix the a/c, and I figure if the p/s and oil leaks aren't too bad, I could deal with it until I can address those as well. Do you think this is worth 750, or am I digging myself a grave? Thank you all for any and all input!
Mitch

You should price the parts that will (probably) need replacing. And inquire about timing belt, water pump, idler which may also need to be replaced.
Volvo parts aren't particularly cheap, as you will learn. Scope out the search engine here for the problems with the AWD system. Some members simply give up and detach the rear drive shaft. Which, of course, defeats, AWD system. Oil leak could be from anywhere. You're not happy if there's a hole in the pan, are you?
There was once a regular contributor here who had a similar vintage Volvo. He just gave up and now is into hypermileage with his collection of Geo Metros.
New tires at $400? Where do you buy tires for $50 each? Maybe they are new to that vehicle?
Sounds like the current owner has said "enough". $750 is probably below parting out/scrap value. Does it have a good title? I'd be concerned.
